102mm-45cal Mk.XVI
Bring an important Royal Navy weapon of the Second World War to your collection with this detailed model of the British 102mm/45 calibre QF Mark XVI naval gun. Designed for dual-purpose service, the Mark XVI equipped numerous British and Commonwealth warships and is an excellent addition to historically themed ship displays, dockyard scenes and naval collections.
Historical Role
Introduced before the outbreak of the Second World War, the QF 4-inch Mark XVI became one of the Royal Navy’s principal dual-purpose naval guns. It could engage enemy aircraft at high elevation while also providing effective fire against surface targets. The weapon was installed aboard destroyers, cruisers, battleships, aircraft carriers, sloops and convoy escorts, often in the twin Mark XIX mounting. Its versatility made it particularly valuable during convoy protection, anti-aircraft defence and operations in contested coastal waters.
Distinctive Appearance
The Mark XVI is recognisable by its long, relatively slender 45-calibre barrel, substantial breech assembly and robust mounting equipment. In its familiar twin configuration, the closely paired barrels, elevated trunnion arrangement and angular protective shield create a characteristic wartime Royal Navy silhouette. These features make the model visually effective as either a focal point or a supporting detail within a larger naval setting.
Modelling Uses
This model is suited to warship and dockyard dioramas, coastal defence scenes, model railways with harbour or naval facilities, wargaming displays and specialist collectors of British Second World War equipment. Smaller scales work well for expansive ports and fleet scenes, while the larger options provide greater presence for detailed displays, painting projects and museum-style collections.
Fun Fact
Although commonly described as a 102mm gun, its official British designation was 4-inch, equivalent to 101.6mm. The Mark XVI’s dual-purpose capability allowed the same weapon system to contribute to both anti-aircraft defence and surface action.
