10.5 cm leFH 18

Bring a cornerstone of German divisional artillery to your collection with this detailed 3D-printed model of the 10.5 cm leichte Feldhaubitze 18. Introduced into Wehrmacht service before the Second World War, the leFH 18 became one of Germany’s principal light field howitzers and served across the major European and North African campaigns.

Historical Role

The leFH 18 provided indirect fire support to German infantry divisions, engaging field positions, troop concentrations and other battlefield targets with high-explosive and specialised ammunition. It could be moved by horse teams or motorised towing vehicles, reflecting the varied transport capabilities of Wehrmacht artillery units. Its useful elevation and traversing carriage allowed gun crews to deliver supporting fire from concealed positions behind the front line.

Distinctive Appearance

This howitzer is recognisable by its substantial 10.5 cm barrel, protective gun shield, large road wheels and split-trail carriage. When deployed, the trails opened to provide a stable firing platform and a wider field of traverse. The original leFH 18 also lacked the prominent muzzle brake associated with the later leFH 18M, giving its barrel a comparatively clean and straightforward profile.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for Second World War dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of German military equipment. It can be placed in a prepared artillery position, shown under tow in a marching column, or combined with gun crews, ammunition crates, limbers and towing vehicles to create a convincing divisional artillery scene.

Fun Fact

Although officially classified as a light field howitzer, the leFH 18 was a robust and relatively heavy weapon for its category. Its basic design later led to improved versions intended to increase range or simplify production while retaining the familiar 10.5 cm artillery role.
