10.5cm Flak36

The German 10.5cm Flak36 was a heavy anti-aircraft gun developed for long-range air defence during the Second World War. This finely detailed model captures the imposing proportions and complex artillery layout of a weapon designed to counter high-flying aircraft and protect strategically important positions.

Historical Role

Heavy Flak batteries formed an essential part of Germany’s wartime air-defence network. Operated primarily by Luftwaffe Flak units, 10.5cm-class guns defended cities, industrial areas, ports, airfields and military installations against bomber formations. Their range and powerful ammunition allowed them to engage aircraft at greater altitudes than lighter anti-aircraft weapons, usually with coordinated range-finding, fire-control and searchlight support.

Distinctive Appearance

The Flak36 is visually defined by its long barrel, substantial breech assembly and elevated mounting. Its heavy cruciform firing platform, stabilising outriggers and robust pedestal reflect the forces generated by a large-calibre anti-aircraft weapon. Additional details around the aiming equipment, crew positions and transport arrangement give the model a mechanical, purposeful appearance that contrasts strongly with smaller German Flak guns.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for World War II dioramas depicting a prepared Flak position, urban air defence, an industrial installation or a gun being moved into action. It can also provide a distinctive military load or trackside scene for model railways. The available sizes make it suitable for tabletop wargaming displays, larger-scale scenic projects and collectors building a representative selection of German wartime artillery.

Fun Fact

The word “Flak” comes from the German term Flugabwehrkanone, meaning anti-aircraft cannon. Heavy Flak guns rarely operated alone: they were normally integrated into batteries using optical rangefinders, predictors and central fire-control equipment to direct coordinated fire against aircraft moving at speed and altitude.
