10cm Kanone 04-14

The German 10cm Kanone 04-14, commonly written as 10cm K 04/14, was a legacy heavy field gun that remained relevant to German artillery collections during the World War II era. Originating before the conflict, its traditional profile makes it an excellent choice for portraying older equipment employed in training, reserve, fortress or static-defence settings.

Historical Role

Designed for long-range artillery fire, the Kanone 04-14 was intended to engage enemy batteries, fortified positions, communications routes and troop concentrations from behind the front line. By World War II, more modern guns had overtaken its original field role, but weapons of this generation could still support the Wehrmacht in secondary duties where mobility and the latest performance were less important.

Distinctive Appearance

The model is characterised by its long, slender barrel, prominent recoil assembly, large spoked wheels and substantial box-trail carriage. Its exposed mechanisms and early twentieth-century artillery construction create a noticeably different silhouette from later German guns fitted with split trails, pneumatic tyres and more streamlined carriages.

Variant Differences

The 04-14 designation identifies a 1914 development of the earlier 10cm Kanone 04 rather than a completely new artillery design. It retained the same general 10cm-class armament and carriage concept while incorporating revised carriage and elevation-related features based on service experience. For modellers, the principal differences are found in the carriage fittings and associated mechanisms, reflecting efforts to keep the established weapon effective and practical.

Modelling Uses

This artillery piece is ideal for German rear-area positions, training grounds, fortified batteries and equipment parks. It can serve as a detailed centrepiece in dioramas, a distinctive load or lineside subject for model railways, a heavy-artillery element in wargaming displays, or an unusual addition for collectors of German military equipment.

Fun Fact

Despite its “10cm” designation, the gun belonged to Germany’s 10.5cm artillery class. Period German nomenclature often used the shortened 10cm title for these long-barrelled Kanonen.
