122mm M1931-1937 Howitzer

Recreate a formidable piece of Soviet heavy artillery with this detailed 122mm M1931/37 model. Although sometimes described as a howitzer in model collections, the weapon was historically designated the 122mm corps gun M1931/37, or A-19. Its powerful profile makes an imposing addition to any Red Army artillery battery or Eastern Front scene.

Historical Role

The A-19 served as a long-range corps artillery weapon during the Second World War. Soviet crews used it for counter-battery fire, engaging fortified positions, disrupting transport routes and striking troop concentrations beyond the reach of lighter field guns. Its powerful 122mm ammunition could also be effective against heavily armoured vehicles when the tactical situation demanded direct fire.

Distinctive Appearance

This artillery piece is distinguished by its exceptionally long barrel, prominent recoil mechanism, broad protective shield and substantial carriage. The split trails, large road wheels and low firing stance give it a purposeful silhouette that contrasts clearly with shorter-barrelled Soviet howitzers. Displayed deployed or prepared for towing, it immediately conveys the weight and reach of Red Army corps artillery.

Variant Differences

The M1931/37 developed from the earlier M1931 A-19 gun by combining its 122mm barrel and ballistic role with the improved carriage associated with the 152mm ML-20 howitzer-gun. The revised split-trail mounting offered a more practical platform and greater commonality between Soviet heavy artillery systems. For modellers, the robust shared carriage, shield and long gun barrel are its most recognisable features.

Modelling Uses

Ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, artillery emplacements, wargaming displays and collectors of Soviet military equipment. Smaller scales suit railway layouts and massed batteries, while larger versions provide greater visual presence for painting, weathering and detailed display scenes.

Fun Fact

The famous 122mm D-25 tank gun fitted to the IS-2 heavy tank was developed using the proven ballistic characteristics of the A-19, linking this field artillery piece to one of the Red Army’s best-known late-war armoured vehicles.
