12.8cm K 44 L/55

Recreate one of Germany’s most formidable late-war heavy guns with this detailed model of the 12.8cm K 44 L/55. Developed during the Second World War, this imposing weapon combined a long barrel with a substantial carriage and powerful ammunition. Its unmistakable size makes it a dramatic centrepiece for artillery positions, maintenance scenes and late-war Wehrmacht displays.

Historical Role

The 12.8cm K 44 was conceived as a heavy field gun capable of engaging distant targets, but the growing strength of Allied armour increased the importance of its anti-tank role. Its high-velocity 12.8cm ammunition could challenge heavily protected vehicles at long range. However, the gun’s considerable weight made movement and emplacement difficult, so it was best suited to prepared firing positions, defensive sectors and locations where suitable towing equipment was available.

Distinctive Appearance

The model is defined by its exceptionally long L/55 barrel, prominent muzzle brake, large breech assembly and heavily constructed mounting. Its broad firing platform and robust running gear convey the considerable weight of the weapon, while the elevated barrel creates an imposing silhouette. These features clearly distinguish the K 44 from lighter German anti-tank guns and conventional field artillery pieces.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for late-war European dioramas, fortified defensive positions, artillery batteries and workshop or transport scenes. Smaller scales are well suited to model railways and compact wargaming displays, while larger versions offer additional presence for detailed painting, weathering and scenic groundwork. It is also an impressive subject for collectors of German Second World War artillery and specialist anti-tank weapons.

Fun Fact

The K 44’s powerful 12.8cm L/55 weapon was closely associated with the gun fitted to the Jagdtiger heavy tank destroyer, linking this towed artillery design with one of the heaviest armoured fighting vehicles fielded by Germany during the war.
