13 inch Seacoast Mortar Model (1861) – RARE FIND
Recreate one of the most imposing heavy artillery pieces of the American Civil War with this detailed 13 inch Seacoast Mortar Model (1861). Designed in the United States for powerful high-angle fire, this substantial mortar makes an unusual centrepiece for artillery collections, fortified positions and historical scenes. It receives our RARE FIND badge because Civil War-era seacoast mortars are uncommon subjects in the scale-modelling world.
Historical Role
The Model 1861 seacoast mortar was a large, muzzle-loading smoothbore weapon intended to fire explosive shells in a steep trajectory. This allowed its projectiles to pass over defensive walls and parapets before descending onto fortifications, artillery positions and other protected targets. Although primarily associated with fixed coastal defences, weapons of this type also played an important role in siege operations during the American Civil War.
Distinctive Appearance
The mortar is distinguished by its enormous, thick-walled barrel, wide muzzle and short, compact profile. Mounted low on a heavy bed, it has a purposeful silhouette very different from long-barrelled field guns and coastal cannon. The deeply recessed bore and substantial supporting structure emphasise the immense weight and power of the original artillery piece.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for American Civil War fortifications, coastal batteries, siege dioramas and museum-style artillery displays. It can also provide an unusual historical load or static exhibit for model railways. Wargaming displays can use it as a heavy siege objective or defended emplacement, while collectors will appreciate a subject rarely represented alongside more familiar field artillery.
Fun Fact
A famous 13-inch seacoast mortar nicknamed “The Dictator” was mounted on a specially reinforced railway flatcar during the Siege of Petersburg. The railway mounting allowed this exceptionally heavy weapon to be moved into position and used against Confederate defences.
