15 cm sFH 18
Recreate one of the Wehrmacht’s principal heavy field howitzers with this detailed 3D-printed model of the 15 cm schwere Feldhaubitze 18. Introduced during the 1930s, the sFH 18 became the standard German heavy howitzer of the Second World War, serving on multiple fronts as a powerful source of long-range artillery support.
Historical Role
The 15 cm sFH 18 equipped German heavy artillery battalions and was employed to bombard fortified positions, troop concentrations, transport routes and enemy artillery. Its high-explosive shells provided substantial destructive power in support of Wehrmacht operations. The weapon could be moved by motorised artillery tractors, while horse-drawn transport also remained in use, particularly where vehicles were unavailable or terrain and supply conditions restricted mobility.
Distinctive Appearance
The sFH 18 is recognisable by its long, substantial barrel, prominent recoil mechanism and broad split-trail carriage. Large spoked wheels, angular trail legs and the robust gun shield arrangement give the howitzer a purposeful, heavy appearance. In a deployed position, the opened trails and lowered barrel create a wide silhouette that clearly distinguishes it from lighter German field artillery pieces.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for World War II artillery batteries, Eastern Front scenes, Western European gun positions and Wehrmacht supply or towing displays. It can form the centrepiece of detailed dioramas, add authentic military traffic to period model railways, enhance wargaming displays, or join the collections of artillery and German military equipment enthusiasts. It can be displayed in firing position or combined with suitable tractors, ammunition crews and support vehicles.
Fun Fact
The sFH 18 shared its split-trail carriage design with the German 10 cm schwere Kanone 18, allowing two artillery pieces with different battlefield purposes to use closely related running gear and towing arrangements.
