152 mm ML-20 Gun-Howitzer
Bring the formidable firepower of Soviet heavy artillery to your collection with this detailed model of the 152 mm ML-20 gun-howitzer. Introduced before the Second World War, the ML-20 combined long-range artillery performance with the heavy shell and elevated firing capability of a howitzer, making it one of the Red Army’s most versatile large-calibre weapons.
Historical Role
The ML-20 served primarily with Soviet corps- and army-level artillery formations throughout the Eastern Front. Its principal duties included counter-battery fire, bombardment of fortified positions, destruction of field defences and support for major offensives. Although designed chiefly for indirect fire, it could also engage bunkers and armoured vehicles over open sights when battlefield conditions demanded direct fire.
Distinctive Appearance
The weapon is immediately recognisable by its long 152 mm barrel, prominent muzzle brake, substantial recoil mechanism and broad protective shield. Its heavy split-trail carriage, large road wheels and robust towing arrangement reflect the demands of moving and firing such a powerful artillery piece. These features give the ML-20 an imposing profile in either deployed or transport-themed displays.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, Soviet artillery batteries, firing positions, ammunition scenes and towing displays. Smaller scales suit model railways and larger battlefield layouts, while the larger editions provide a strong centrepiece for detailed dioramas. It is equally suitable for wargaming displays, military history enthusiasts and collectors of Red Army equipment.
Fun Fact
A modified version of the ML-20, designated ML-20S, armed the Soviet SU-152 and ISU-152 self-propelled guns. This allowed the proven artillery weapon to deliver its heavy shell from an armoured, mobile platform during major Red Army operations.
