155mm M1-A2 Howitzer
Bring substantial American artillery power to your collection with this detailed model of the 155mm M1-A2 Howitzer. Developed during the Second World War, this imposing towed weapon formed part of the United States Army’s heavy field artillery capability. Its robust carriage, substantial barrel and purposeful engineering make it an impressive centrepiece for military layouts and historical displays.
Historical Role
The M1-series 155mm howitzer was designed to deliver heavy high-explosive fire against fortified positions, troop concentrations, transport routes and enemy artillery. Operating behind the front line, American gun crews used weapons of this family for sustained indirect-fire support during major campaigns. The howitzer was normally moved by a heavy artillery tractor or truck, then deployed with its trails spread to provide a stable firing platform.
Distinctive Appearance
The M1-A2 is recognisable by its thick 155mm barrel, prominent recoil assembly, broad split-trail carriage and paired road wheels. When deployed, the widely opened trails give the weapon a low, stable stance, while the large breech and substantial carriage reflect the forces generated when firing heavy artillery ammunition. These features distinguish it from the longer, more streamlined 155mm “Long Tom” gun.
Variant Differences
The M1-A2 developed from the original M1 155mm howitzer through detail refinements to the weapon’s breech and firing arrangements. It retained the same basic calibre, artillery role and split-trail carriage, so the most visible modelling differences are subtle rather than a complete change of silhouette. The refinements supported continued production and improved service use without replacing the proven overall design.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for World War II artillery batteries, gun-line dioramas, vehicle parks and towing scenes. It also suits model railways featuring military transport, tabletop wargaming displays and collectors of United States Army equipment. Smaller scales work especially well in larger battery scenes, while the larger options provide greater presence for painting and display.
Fun Fact
The M1-series howitzer was redesignated the M114 in 1962, and its successful design remained in service with the United States and other nations long after World War II.
