15cm Kanone 16 (Krupp) (1916)
Recreate one of Germany’s imposing long-range artillery pieces with this detailed 3D-printed model of the 15cm Kanone 16 manufactured by Krupp. Designed during the First World War and retained for Wehrmacht service during the Second World War, the K 16 brings a distinctive heavy-artillery presence to historical collections, gun positions and battlefield scenes.
Historical Role
The 15cm Kanone 16 was developed to provide German forces with long-range heavy firepower. Its principal duties included counter-battery fire, bombardment of fortified positions and engagement of important targets behind the front line. Although a 1916 design, surviving guns remained in German inventories during the Second World War, serving in heavy artillery and coastal-defence roles where their range and powerful shell remained useful.
Distinctive Appearance
The Krupp K 16 is immediately recognisable by its exceptionally long barrel, substantial recoil cradle and tall, steel-rimmed spoked wheels. Its angular box-trail carriage, compact gun shield and heavy supporting structure reflect the practical engineering of early twentieth-century German artillery. These features create a striking silhouette that contrasts strongly with shorter field howitzers and later artillery pieces fitted with split trails and pneumatic tyres.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for First World War batteries, early-war Wehrmacht scenes, coastal gun emplacements and rear-area artillery dioramas. Smaller scales suit model railways, transport scenes and wargaming displays, while larger versions provide excellent opportunities for detailed painting, weathering and groundwork. It is also a distinctive display piece for collectors of German artillery and military engineering.
Fun Fact
Because the K 16 was too heavy for convenient movement as a single load over period roads, it could be transported with the barrel separated from the carriage. This makes it suitable for both deployed firing scenes and unusual towing or assembly dioramas.
