15cm.Slg. s.F.H.13 Krupp L17

Recreate a veteran German heavy field howitzer with this detailed model of the 15cm.Slg. s.F.H.13 Krupp L17. Originating from First World War artillery development, surviving weapons remained relevant in Wehrmacht service during the Second World War, particularly in reserve, training and static artillery roles.

Historical Role

The 15 cm schwere Feldhaubitze was designed to deliver powerful indirect fire against field fortifications, artillery positions, troop concentrations and other protected targets. Its high-explosive shells provided German heavy artillery batteries with considerably greater destructive effect than lighter field guns. By World War II, the design was no longer Germany’s most modern field howitzer, but available examples could still support second-line formations and prepared defensive positions.

Distinctive Appearance

The model captures the howitzer’s characteristic Krupp form: a substantial L/17 barrel, prominent recoil housing, broad protective shield, large spoked wheels and a robust box-trail carriage. The combination of an imposing gun tube with an early artillery carriage gives it a distinctly transitional appearance, bridging First World War engineering and later Wehrmacht artillery service.

Variant Differences

The long-barrelled s.F.H.13 developed from the standard 15 cm s.F.H.13. Its principal armament change was the longer L/17 tube, introduced to improve ballistic performance and extend useful range while retaining the established 15 cm heavy-howitzer concept. For modellers, the extended barrel is the clearest visual distinction from the shorter original configuration.

Modelling Uses

This artillery piece is ideal for German gun positions, defensive emplacements, artillery parks and workshop scenes. It can provide a strong focal point in World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and specialist collections. Add a gun crew, ammunition, towing equipment or earthworks to create a convincing operational setting.

Fun Fact

The “L/17” designation describes the barrel length in relation to its calibre: approximately seventeen times the bore diameter. It is a measurement system, not a reference to the year 1917.
