20mm FlaK 30
Recreate one of the Wehrmacht’s characteristic light anti-aircraft weapons with this detailed 20mm FlaK 30 model. Compact, mobile and instantly recognisable, the gun is ideal for adding authentic German World War II air-defence capability to military scenes, gun positions and transport displays.
Historical Role
Introduced during the 1930s, the 2 cm FlaK 30 served as a light anti-aircraft gun with German forces throughout World War II. It was intended to engage low-flying aircraft and protect columns, headquarters, supply areas and other strategically important positions. Its light construction allowed it to be moved on a two-wheeled trailer and deployed rapidly. Although designed for air defence, the FlaK 30 could also be used against exposed infantry, soft-skinned vehicles and lightly protected ground targets when battlefield conditions required direct fire.
Distinctive Appearance
The FlaK 30 is distinguished by its long, slender 20mm barrel, single-gun mounting and angular protective shield. A compact pedestal and low firing platform gave the weapon a broad field of traverse, while the top-mounted box magazine created a particularly recognisable silhouette. Its combination of mechanical controls, sighting equipment and folding stabilising structure makes it an engaging subject with plenty of visible detail.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to early-war and mid-war Wehrmacht dioramas, anti-aircraft emplacements, airfield defence scenes and roadside deployments. It can also be positioned beside a towing vehicle, ammunition crew or supply stack. Smaller scales are ideal for model railways and wargaming displays, while the larger versions offer added presence for detailed scenes, painting projects and collectors of German artillery.
Fun Fact
The FlaK 30 was fed by compact 20-round box magazines. This limited continuous fire, so an effective crew needed to replace magazines quickly while maintaining aim against fast-moving aerial targets.
