20mm Flak 38
Bring a defining German light anti-aircraft weapon of the Second World War to your collection with this detailed 20mm Flak 38 model. Officially designated the 2 cm Flak 38, this compact, rapid-firing cannon became a familiar sight with Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe formations across multiple theatres of war.
Historical Role
The Flak 38 was designed for close-range defence against low-flying aircraft, protecting troops, transport columns, headquarters and strategic positions. Its mobility allowed crews to reposition it as battlefield conditions changed. Although primarily an anti-aircraft weapon, it could also engage lightly armoured vehicles, exposed personnel and other ground targets when required.
Distinctive Appearance
The weapon is instantly recognisable by its slim 20mm barrel, prominent sights, compact central mounting and angular protective shield. Its cruciform firing platform provided a stable base, while folding outriggers and a separate two-wheeled trailer enabled transport. These exposed mechanical components, together with the crew’s open fighting position, create a highly detailed and visually engaging modelling subject.
Variant Differences
The Flak 38 was developed from the earlier 2 cm Flak 30. It retained the same general role and ammunition but incorporated a revised operating mechanism that increased the practical and cyclic rates of fire while improving reliability. For modellers, differences are most apparent in the weapon mechanism, mounting details and associated fittings. The improved design addressed the Flak 30’s tendency to jam and provided German units with a more effective defence against increasingly fast aircraft.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the Flak 38 suits airfield defence scenes, roadside emplacements, fortified positions and mobile Wehrmacht columns. Smaller scales work especially well for railway layouts and massed gaming forces, while larger scales provide greater scope for painting, weathering and scenic detailing.
Fun Fact
The Flak 38’s compact design was so adaptable that the same basic 20mm weapon appeared in static, towed, vehicle-mounted and naval anti-aircraft installations.
