20mm L70 Oerlikon Mk.10

Recreate a familiar element of British wartime air defence with this finely detailed 20mm L70 Oerlikon Mk.10 model. The Oerlikon was a compact, rapid-firing automatic cannon widely associated with Royal Navy vessels and defensive positions during the Second World War. Its practical design and comparatively light mounting made it suitable for installation wherever additional close-range protection was required.

Historical Role

During the Second World War, 20mm Oerlikon cannon provided short-range defence against low-flying aircraft. In British service, they were particularly important aboard warships, merchant vessels and smaller naval craft, supplementing heavier anti-aircraft weapons by engaging targets that had penetrated the outer defensive screen. The weapon could also be used against exposed personnel, light craft and other vulnerable surface targets when necessary.

Distinctive Appearance

The Oerlikon is immediately recognisable by its long, slender barrel, prominent circular ammunition drum and compact manually operated mounting. Shoulder supports, hand controls and the open gunner’s position give the weapon a purposeful silhouette while clearly showing how the crew aimed and traversed it. These exposed mechanical details make the model especially effective as a focal point on a ship, harbour emplacement or wartime defensive scene.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for Second World War naval dioramas, coastal and harbour scenes, armed merchant ship projects and dockside model railways. It can also add authentic close-defence detail to wargaming displays or serve as a compact standalone piece for collectors of British military and naval equipment. The range of scales supports everything from railway layouts and fleet scenes to larger, detail-focused display builds.

Fun Fact

The Oerlikon’s top-mounted drum became one of its most recognisable features. Empty drums could be exchanged by the crew, allowing the gun to return to action without the bulky belt-feed arrangements used by many other automatic weapons.
