21cm Brumbar

Bring an imposing German late-war assault-gun concept to your collection with the 21cm Brumbar. Based on the heavily armoured Sturmpanzer IV family, this model combines the familiar Panzer IV chassis with an enlarged fighting compartment and a substantial 21cm weapon installation.

Historical Role

The 21cm Brumbar was conceived for the close-support role, where a heavy-calibre weapon could engage fortifications, strongpoints and defended urban positions. Unlike a conventional Panzer intended for mobile armoured combat, this projected vehicle belonged to the Wehrmacht’s Sturmpanzer tradition: direct-fire assault artillery designed to support infantry at short range. It should be regarded as a development concept rather than a documented production vehicle in frontline service.

Distinctive Appearance

The model is defined by its compact Panzer IV running gear, broad tracks and tall, slab-sided casemate. Its exceptionally thick, short 21cm barrel and substantial mantlet create a powerful frontal profile, while the enclosed superstructure gives it the unmistakable silhouette associated with German heavy assault guns.

Variant Differences

This concept developed from the Sturmpanzer IV, commonly known as the Brummbär, which carried a 15cm StuH 43-series assault howitzer. The defining difference is the proposed 21cm armament, requiring an adapted weapon mounting and altered casemate arrangement while retaining the Panzer IV-based automotive layout. The larger weapon was intended to deliver greater destructive effect against hardened battlefield targets.

Modelling Uses

The 21cm Brumbar makes an unusual centrepiece for late-war dioramas, model railways and wargaming displays. Its distinctive proportions also suit speculative development scenes, workshop settings and comparative line-ups of German assault artillery. It is an engaging choice for collectors seeking a lesser-known vehicle concept.

Fun Fact

Although “Brummbär” is the best-known name today, German crews commonly referred to the standard Sturmpanzer IV as the “Stupa,” an abbreviation of Sturmpanzer. The 21cm interpretation takes that familiar assault-gun form in a more heavily armed direction.
