21cm Howitzer (1910)

Recreate an imposing piece of German heavy artillery with this detailed model of the 21cm Howitzer (1910), historically known as the 21 cm Mörser 10. Developed by Krupp before the First World War, this formidable weapon remained available to the Wehrmacht during the Second World War, although newer heavy-artillery designs had largely superseded it.

Historical Role

The 21 cm Mörser 10 was designed to deliver powerful high-explosive shells against fortifications, entrenched positions and other hardened targets. Operating behind the front line, its crew used indirect fire to support major assaults and siege operations. The weapon was transported in separate loads for movement, reflecting the considerable weight of early twentieth-century heavy artillery. By World War II it was an ageing design, but surviving examples could still supplement German heavy-artillery units where suitable weapons were required.

Distinctive Appearance

The model captures the Mörser 10’s unmistakable combination of a short, thick barrel, substantial recoil assembly and heavy box-trail carriage. Large spoked wheels, prominent crew platforms and the compact mounting give the weapon a purposeful, industrial appearance. These features clearly distinguish it from later German artillery pieces fitted with split trails, pneumatic tyres or more modern towing arrangements.

Modelling Uses

An excellent centrepiece for heavy-artillery batteries, siege scenes, gun positions and transport displays. Smaller scales suit model railways and expansive wargaming displays, while larger versions provide room for detailed painting, weathering and groundwork. It is also a distinctive subject for collectors of German artillery, First World War equipment and early World War II ordnance.

Fun Fact

Despite its German designation as a “Mörser,” the weapon was not a mortar in the modern infantry sense. German artillery terminology used the name for a heavy, high-angle siege howitzer intended to strike protected targets with plunging fire.
