21cm Mörser 18

Bring the formidable presence of German heavy artillery to your collection with this detailed 3D-printed model of the 21cm Mörser 18. Introduced into Wehrmacht service shortly before the Second World War, this imposing artillery piece combined substantial destructive power with a sophisticated carriage designed to manage the recoil of its heavy shells.

Historical Role

The 21cm Mörser 18 served with German heavy artillery units, providing long-range fire against fortified positions, strongpoints, troop concentrations and enemy artillery. Rather than operating as a front-line field gun, it was deployed as a major supporting weapon at corps and army level. Its considerable weight required dedicated transport and careful emplacement, but once prepared for action it delivered powerful high-explosive fire on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.

Distinctive Appearance

Despite its Mörser designation, the weapon has the long, purposeful profile of a heavy howitzer. Distinguishing features include its large-calibre barrel, substantial recoil cradle, box-like carriage, prominent equilibrators and broad firing platform. The unusual dual-recoil arrangement allowed the barrel to recoil in its cradle while the upper carriage also moved against the lower carriage, helping absorb the forces generated when firing. Its heavy split-trail structure and large transport wheels create an unmistakable silhouette.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for Wehrmacht artillery batteries, siege scenes, firing positions, transport columns and maintenance settings. It can form a dramatic centrepiece in World War II dioramas, add authentic military traffic to period model railways, enhance wargaming displays, or provide collectors with a representative example of German heavy artillery engineering.

Fun Fact

The German term “Mörser” suggests a mortar, yet the 21cm Mörser 18 looked and operated more like a conventional heavy howitzer. Its carriage design was also adapted for the longer-ranged 17cm Kanone 18.
