240mm M240 Mortar – RARE FIND
Bring the imposing scale of Soviet heavy artillery to your collection with this detailed model of the 240mm M-240 mortar. Conceived during the closing phase of the Second World War and developed into its definitive post-war form, this immense weapon reflected Red Army experience in overcoming fortified positions with high-angle fire. It receives the RARE FIND badge because a very large 240mm mortar is an unusual artillery subject seldom represented in model form.
Historical Role
The M-240 was designed to deliver exceptionally heavy mortar bombs against bunkers, field fortifications, entrenched troops and other protected targets. Its steep trajectory allowed fire to reach positions concealed behind terrain or defensive works. Although its development had late-war Soviet roots, testing and adoption were completed after World War II, making it an important bridge between wartime artillery practice and post-war Soviet heavy mortar doctrine.
Distinctive Appearance
The model is dominated by its enormous smoothbore barrel, supported on a robust two-wheeled carriage with a substantial circular baseplate. The long tube, heavy mounting, towing arrangement and loading equipment give the M-240 a purposeful silhouette quite unlike conventional field guns or smaller infantry mortars. Its sheer proportions make the weapon immediately recognisable in any artillery scene.
Modelling Uses
An excellent centrepiece for late-war development displays, post-war Soviet artillery settings and Eastern Front-inspired comparative collections. Smaller scales are ideal for model railways and wargaming displays, while larger versions offer strong opportunities for detailed painting, weathering and crew dioramas. It is also an unusual choice for collectors seeking distinctive Soviet artillery subjects beyond familiar tanks and guns.
Fun Fact
The M-240 was loaded with the barrel lowered toward the horizontal, as its standard high-explosive mortar bomb weighed around 130 kilograms—far too heavy for conventional muzzle-loading by hand.
