3.7 cm Pak 36
Recreate one of the Wehrmacht’s most recognisable early-war anti-tank guns with this detailed 3.7 cm Pak 36 model. Its compact proportions, low profile and characteristic gun shield make it an ideal addition to German World War II scenes, from advancing columns and prepared defensive positions to training areas and artillery parks.
Historical Role
The 3.7 cm Panzerabwehrkanone 36 was the standard German anti-tank gun at the beginning of World War II. Light enough to be moved by its crew over short distances and normally towed between positions, it served in anti-tank units during the campaigns in Poland, Western Europe and the opening stages of the Eastern Front. Although effective against many early light tanks, its performance became increasingly limited as thicker armour appeared. It subsequently remained useful against lightly armoured vehicles and field positions, while later ammunition such as the muzzle-loaded Stielgranate 41 extended its close-range anti-armour capability.
Distinctive Appearance
The Pak 36 is distinguished by its small-calibre barrel, low angular shield, compact carriage and widely spread split trails. Its two road wheels and crouched firing stance gave the crew a low silhouette that could be concealed behind shallow cover, vegetation or prepared earthworks. These features create an unmistakable early-war German anti-tank gun profile in miniature.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to dioramas depicting Wehrmacht infantry support, roadside ambushes, gun emplacements or abandoned battlefield equipment. It can also provide an authentic military load or lineside scene for model railways, a compact anti-tank position for wargaming displays, or a historically significant artillery piece for collectors of German World War II equipment.
Fun Fact
As heavier Allied and Soviet tanks exposed the gun’s limitations, German troops reportedly nicknamed the Pak 36 the “Heeresanklopfgerät,” or “army door-knocking device,” reflecting how its projectiles could strike armour without reliably penetrating it.
