37 mm 61-K Anti-Aircraft Gun
Bring an essential element of Soviet World War II air defence to your collection with this detailed model of the 37 mm Automatic Anti-Aircraft Gun M1939, better known by its factory designation, 61-K. Designed for rapid engagement of low-flying aircraft, this compact yet formidable weapon became one of the Red Army’s principal light anti-aircraft guns.
Historical Role
Introduced shortly before the Second World War, the 61-K served extensively with Soviet forces throughout the conflict, including on the Eastern Front. Its automatic 37 mm armament was intended to defend troops, transport columns, supply areas and important positions against aircraft operating at low and medium altitudes. When required, crews could also employ the gun against lightly armoured vehicles, exposed personnel and other ground targets.
Distinctive Appearance
The 61-K is immediately recognisable by its long, slender barrel, prominent recoil mechanism and compact working platform. The weapon was mounted on a mobile four-wheeled carriage that could be deployed with stabilising outriggers for firing. Crew seats, aiming equipment, ammunition-loading area and the gun’s angular shield and fittings create an intricate silhouette that rewards careful painting, weathering and detailing.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, Red Army defensive positions, supply depots and roadside anti-aircraft emplacements. It also makes a convincing load or towing subject for model railways and military transport scenes. Wargaming displays can use it as a recognisable Soviet air-defence asset, while collectors will appreciate its historically significant form across several popular modelling scales.
Fun Fact
The 61-K was normally fed using five-round ammunition clips, allowing its crew to maintain rapid fire while keeping the weapon relatively compact and practical for field deployment.
