3.7 cm Pak 35/36
Recreate one of the Wehrmacht’s most recognisable early-war anti-tank guns with this detailed 3D-printed model of the 3.7 cm Pak 35/36. Compact, low-slung and easily handled by its crew, this light artillery piece is ideal for adding an authentic German anti-tank position to a World War II collection or battlefield scene.
Historical Role
The 3.7 cm Panzerabwehrkanone 35/36 was the standard German anti-tank gun during the opening campaigns of World War II. It was employed by Wehrmacht anti-tank units to engage armoured vehicles, defend road junctions and support infantry formations. Its light weight allowed crews to manoeuvre it by hand over short distances. Although effective against many early-war tanks, improvements in Allied armour increasingly limited its conventional anti-tank capability as the conflict progressed.
Distinctive Appearance
The Pak 35/36 is distinguished by its compact proportions, low firing profile and relatively short 3.7 cm barrel. Its curved protective shield, two-wheel carriage and widely spread split trails create an unmistakable silhouette. The small size of the weapon, together with its exposed crew position and simple optical sight arrangement, reflects the emphasis placed on concealment, mobility and rapid deployment.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to early-war dioramas depicting the campaigns in Poland, France or on the Eastern Front. It can be positioned in a prepared gun pit, beside a roadblock, under camouflage or being moved by a crew. The smaller scales work particularly well for model railways and wargaming displays, while the larger versions offer greater presence and visible detail for dedicated military collectors.
Fun Fact
As heavier enemy tanks appeared, German troops jokingly nicknamed the Pak 35/36 the “Heeresanklopfgerät,” or “army door-knocking device,” because its standard projectiles could strike thick armour without reliably penetrating it. Some guns later used specialised ammunition, including the distinctive Stielgranate 41 projectile, to extend their usefulness.
