37mm M3 on M4 Carriage

Recreate an important early-war American anti-tank weapon with this detailed 37mm Gun M3 mounted on the M4 carriage. Compact, low-profile and readily recognisable, this model is ideal for adding authentic United States Army or Marine Corps fire support to a World War II collection or battlefield scene.

Historical Role

The 37mm M3 was the standard United States anti-tank gun at the beginning of World War II. Designed to be towed into position and operated by a small crew, it was intended to engage the lightly armoured vehicles common during the interwar and early-war periods. Experience in North Africa showed that its armour-piercing performance was increasingly inadequate against newer medium and heavy tanks, leading to its replacement by more powerful weapons in many Army units. It remained valuable in the Pacific, where Japanese tanks were generally lighter and the gun could also be used against bunkers, field positions and infantry.

Distinctive Appearance

The weapon’s slender 37mm barrel, compact protective shield and low-slung M4 split-trail carriage create a distinctive silhouette. Two road wheels supported the carriage during towing, while the trails opened to provide a stable firing platform. Breech components, aiming equipment and crew positions were tightly arranged behind the shield, reflecting the gun’s emphasis on mobility, concealment and a small battlefield footprint.

Modelling Uses

This model suits early-war anti-tank positions, Pacific island defences, North African scenes and training-ground displays. It can be shown deployed with a crew, ammunition and sandbags or placed in towing and transport settings. Its broad scale selection makes it equally useful for dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors building historically themed American forces.

Fun Fact

In addition to armour-piercing ammunition, the 37mm M3 could fire canister rounds, effectively turning the gun into a large battlefield shotgun. This capability helped keep it useful against infantry and close-range defensive positions even after its anti-tank role had diminished.
