37mm PaK.36L AT

Recreate one of the most recognisable German anti-tank guns of the early Second World War with this detailed 37mm PaK.36L AT model. Based on the Wehrmacht’s widely deployed 3.7 cm Pak 36, this compact artillery piece is ideal for adding an authentic anti-tank position, marching column or defensive emplacement to a historically themed collection.

Historical Role

The 3.7 cm Pak 36 served as the standard German anti-tank gun during the opening campaigns of World War II. Its light weight and compact dimensions allowed crews to move and conceal it relatively easily, while its low silhouette suited ambush positions. It was effective against many lightly armoured vehicles encountered early in the war but became increasingly inadequate as heavier Allied and Soviet tanks appeared. The weapon nevertheless remained in service in secondary roles, supporting infantry formations and engaging lighter vehicles or field positions.

Distinctive Appearance

The Pak 36 is distinguished by its slender 37mm barrel, compact breech assembly, low angular gun shield and widely spread split-trail carriage. Large spoked wheels and a notably low firing profile give the weapon its characteristic early-war appearance. These features make it instantly identifiable in a gun line, roadside scene or concealed battlefield position.

Modelling Uses

This model is well suited to early-war Wehrmacht dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of German artillery. Use it in a prepared anti-tank emplacement, behind a towing vehicle, beside an infantry column or abandoned during a retreat. The range of scales supports everything from compact railway layouts to highly detailed display scenes.

Fun Fact

As its armour-piercing performance declined against heavier tanks, German troops reportedly nicknamed the Pak 36 the “Heeresanklopfgerät,” or “army door-knocking device,” reflecting the limited effect of its standard ammunition against thick armour.
