3cm Flak 38-103 Jaboschreck
Bring a formidable late-war German anti-aircraft weapon to your collection with this detailed 3cm Flak 38-103 Jaboschreck model. More commonly identified in historical references as the 3 cm Flak 103/38, it combined a powerful aircraft cannon with a proven light Flak mounting to counter increasingly dangerous low-level air attacks.
Historical Role
Developed during the later stages of the Second World War, the 3 cm Flak 103/38 adapted the MK 103 cannon for ground-based air defence. Its primary targets were low-flying Allied fighters and fighter-bombers attacking German columns, supply routes and defended positions. The heavier 3 cm armament offered greater striking power than the widely used 2 cm Flak weapons, while retaining a relatively compact, mobile mounting suitable for frontline deployment.
Distinctive Appearance
The Jaboschreck is distinguished by its long 3 cm cannon barrel, prominent muzzle fitting, angular protective shield and compact Flak carriage. Elevation and traverse controls, crew positions and the low-set mounting give it the purposeful silhouette associated with German light anti-aircraft artillery. In travelling configuration, the mounting could be paired with a two-wheeled transport trailer.
Variant Differences
The weapon was developed by fitting the larger MK 103 cannon to a modified carriage derived from the 2 cm Flak 38. Compared with the base weapon, it had heavier armament and visibly greater barrel length and bulk. This combination was intended to provide stronger firepower against robust, fast-moving fighter-bombers without requiring an entirely new carriage design.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for late-war Wehrmacht air-defence positions, roadside columns, airfield scenes and urban or rural combat dioramas. It also makes a characterful lineside load or defensive emplacement for model railways, a recognisable objective for wargaming displays, and an unusual artillery subject for collectors.
Fun Fact
The nickname “Jaboschreck” translates approximately as “fighter-bomber terror.” “Jabo” was a German abbreviation for Jagdbomber, meaning fighter-bomber—the aircraft type this weapon was specifically intended to discourage.
