3in M5 on M6 Carriage
Bring substantial American anti-tank firepower to your World War II collection with this detailed model of the 3-inch Gun M5 mounted on the M6 carriage. Developed for the United States Army’s tank destroyer force, this imposing towed weapon makes a striking addition to battlefield scenes, artillery positions and vehicle columns.
Historical Role
The M5 was a heavy towed anti-tank gun designed to engage enemy armour at longer ranges than lighter weapons such as the 37 mm gun. Entering combat during World War II, it served principally with American towed tank destroyer battalions in Italy and north-western Europe. Crews typically deployed it in concealed defensive positions covering roads, open ground and likely armoured approaches. Although powerful, its considerable weight made rapid movement difficult, particularly when crews had to reposition it without a towing vehicle.
Distinctive Appearance
The weapon is immediately recognisable by its long 3-inch barrel, broad angular gun shield and substantial M6 split-trail carriage. Large wheels, a low firing stance and long trail legs give the model a purposeful silhouette, while the prominent breech and recoil assembly add visual interest around the crew position. These features distinguish it from smaller American anti-tank guns and emphasise its role as a hard-hitting defensive weapon.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for dioramas depicting Normandy, Italy, the advance through France or defensive positions in north-western Europe, the M5 can be displayed dug in, under camouflage or attached to a towing vehicle. It is equally suitable for model railways featuring wartime military traffic, historically themed wargaming displays and collectors building a representative range of American artillery and tank destroyer equipment.
Fun Fact
The M5 combined proven elements derived from existing American artillery designs rather than being created entirely from scratch. Examples of the gun later found a ceremonial role in the United States, where its impressive report made it well suited to firing military salutes.
