45 mm M1942 M-42 Anti-Tank Gun

Recreate a compact but important piece of Soviet wartime artillery with this detailed model of the 45 mm M1942, commonly designated the M-42. Developed during the Second World War, this low-profile anti-tank gun became a familiar Red Army weapon and is an excellent addition to Eastern Front collections, gun crews and defensive positions.

Historical Role

Introduced in 1942, the M-42 was designed to improve the performance of the Red Army’s existing 45 mm anti-tank artillery. Its primary role was engaging light and medium armoured vehicles at practical battlefield ranges. As heavier German tanks became increasingly common, the gun remained useful against vulnerable side armour, reconnaissance vehicles, armoured personnel carriers and other lightly protected targets. High-explosive ammunition also allowed it to support infantry by firing on fieldworks, weapon positions and exposed troops.

Distinctive Appearance

The M-42 combined a notably long, slender barrel with a compact carriage, low shield and widely spread trails. Its small wheels and low overall silhouette helped crews conceal the weapon in prepared positions. These features give the model the unmistakable profile of a late-war Soviet light anti-tank gun while leaving the breech, shield, carriage and towing details clearly visible.

Variant Differences

The M-42 was developed from the earlier Soviet 45 mm Model 1937 anti-tank gun, known as the 53-K. It incorporated a longer barrel, a more powerful ammunition charge and related carriage and recoil improvements to increase armour penetration. A thicker protective shield was also fitted. For modellers, the extended barrel and revised shield are the clearest visual distinctions, reflecting the need to keep the established 45 mm weapon relevant against improving enemy armour.

Modelling Uses

Ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the M-42 can be presented in a concealed firing position, deployed beside Soviet infantry, awaiting a tow vehicle or displayed as a standalone artillery study.

Fun Fact

Soviet soldiers commonly referred to 45 mm guns as the “sorokapyatka,” meaning “forty-fiver,” a nickname that became closely associated with Red Army anti-tank crews.
