5 cm Pak 38

Bring a key Wehrmacht anti-tank weapon to your collection with this detailed 3D-printed model of the German 5 cm Panzerabwehrkanone 38. Introduced during the early years of the Second World War, the Pak 38 combined a powerful high-velocity gun with a relatively light, mobile carriage, making it an important step forward from the smaller 3.7 cm Pak 36.

Historical Role

The Pak 38 served as a towed anti-tank gun with German formations in North Africa, the Balkans, Italy and on the Eastern Front. Its 5 cm L/60 barrel offered effective performance against many early-war armoured vehicles. Although heavily armoured tanks such as the Soviet T-34 and KV series exposed its limitations, specialised ammunition could improve its effectiveness at favourable ranges and angles. The weapon remained useful for engaging lighter armour, defensive positions and other battlefield targets.

Distinctive Appearance

The model captures the Pak 38’s long, slender barrel, prominent muzzle brake, protective gun shield and low-profile split-trail carriage. Its compact wheels and widely spread trails created a purposeful firing stance, while the low silhouette helped crews conceal the gun in prepared positions. These recognisable features make it particularly suitable for both deployed and towed scenes.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the Pak 38 can be placed in roadside ambushes, defensive gun lines, transport columns or maintenance settings. It pairs naturally with Wehrmacht gun crews, ammunition crates, towing vehicles and period terrain across European, North African or Eastern Front scenes.

Fun Fact

The Pak 38’s long-barrelled 5 cm gun technology was closely related to the 5 cm KwK 39 L/60 fitted to later Panzer III variants, extending the usefulness of the calibre in both towed and tank-mounted roles.
