50 mm PaK 38L

The 50 mm PaK 38L represents the German 5 cm Panzerabwehrkanone 38, commonly designated the 5 cm Pak 38 (L/60). Introduced during the early years of the Second World War, this purpose-built anti-tank gun gave Wehrmacht formations a more capable successor to the smaller 3.7 cm Pak 36. This detailed model is ideal for recreating German gun positions, marching columns and battlefield scenes.

Historical Role

The Pak 38 served as a towed anti-tank gun with Wehrmacht Panzerjäger units and infantry formations. It saw action across several theatres, including the Eastern Front, North Africa and Western Europe. Its 50 mm gun was effective against many early- and mid-war armoured vehicles, while specialist ammunition could improve its performance against heavier protection. As increasingly well-armoured tanks appeared, the weapon was supplemented by larger anti-tank guns, although it remained in service in secondary and supporting roles.

Distinctive Appearance

The Pak 38 is recognisable by its long, slender L/60 barrel, prominent muzzle brake and low-profile armoured shield. Its split-trail carriage, compact wheels and low firing position allowed the crew to conceal the gun behind fieldworks, vegetation or rubble. The sharply angled shield and balanced carriage create a characteristic silhouette that is unmistakably different from the shorter 3.7 cm Pak 36 and the larger 7.5 cm Pak 40.

Modelling Uses

This model is well suited to World War II dioramas depicting prepared anti-tank positions, Eastern Front fighting, desert deployments or roadside towing scenes. It can also add period detail to model railways, serve as a focal point in wargaming displays, or form part of a curated collection for military history collectors. Smaller scales suit broader battlefield layouts, while larger scales offer greater presence for painting, weathering and display.

Fun Fact

The Pak 38 could fire the scarce tungsten-cored PzGr. 40 armour-piercing round, providing enhanced penetration when engaging more heavily protected targets.
