52-K 85mm AA M1943
Bring a key element of Soviet wartime air defence to your collection with this detailed model of the 52-K 85mm anti-aircraft gun. Representing the weapon in a 1943 Eastern Front setting, it is an excellent choice for recreating Red Army gun positions, transport scenes and defensive emplacements from the middle years of the Second World War.
Historical Role
Officially introduced as the 85mm anti-aircraft gun Model 1939, the 52-K served as one of the Red Army’s principal heavy anti-aircraft weapons during World War II. It was intended to engage medium- and high-altitude aircraft, protecting cities, supply routes, headquarters and troop concentrations. Its high-velocity gun also gave it valuable secondary capability against armoured vehicles and fortified ground targets when battlefield conditions demanded direct fire.
Distinctive Appearance
The 52-K is immediately recognisable by its long, slender barrel, substantial breech assembly and elevated mounting. Its cruciform firing platform, folding stabilising outriggers and four-wheel travelling carriage create a complex, purposeful silhouette. Handwheels, aiming equipment, crew platforms and mechanical details make the gun especially attractive as a standalone display piece or the centre of a busy artillery scene.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, Red Army anti-aircraft batteries, roadside columns, rail-loading scenes and defensive positions. Smaller scales suit model railways and large battlefield layouts, while larger versions provide ample presence for detailed painting and weathering. It also works well in wargaming displays and makes a distinctive addition for collectors of Soviet artillery and World War II equipment.
Fun Fact
The 52-K’s powerful 85mm ballistic lineage helped influence Soviet tank and self-propelled gun development. Related 85mm weapons later armed vehicles such as the SU-85 and T-34-85, helping the Red Army answer increasingly well-protected enemy armour.
