57 mm ZiS-2 Anti-Tank Gun
Bring one of the Red Army’s most formidable anti-tank weapons to your collection with this detailed 3D-printed model of the 57 mm ZiS-2. Designed for Soviet forces during the Second World War, its unusually long barrel and purposeful profile make it an instantly recognisable addition to Eastern Front scenes.
Historical Role
The ZiS-2 was a high-velocity anti-tank gun developed to defeat heavily armoured vehicles at extended combat ranges. Introduced in 1941, production was initially suspended when its performance exceeded the immediate requirements of the battlefield and manufacturing resources were directed towards other weapons. Production resumed in 1943 as German armour became increasingly difficult to defeat. Operated by Red Army anti-tank units, the ZiS-2 was valued for its powerful armour-piercing capability, relatively compact carriage and ability to be concealed in prepared firing positions.
Distinctive Appearance
The defining feature of the ZiS-2 is its exceptionally long, slender 57 mm barrel, which gives the gun a markedly different silhouette from shorter Soviet field and divisional guns. Other characteristic details include the angular protective shield, low-set carriage, split trails, prominent wheels and compact breech area. Together, these features create a lean, purposeful appearance that is ideal for a carefully detailed gun line or concealed anti-tank position.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to Eastern Front dioramas, Red Army defensive positions, artillery parks and late-war battlefield scenes. Smaller scales work particularly well alongside model railways and large wargaming displays, while the larger versions provide more visible detail for painting, weathering and collectors. Add a towing vehicle, ammunition crates, crew figures or battlefield groundwork to create a convincing operational setting.
Fun Fact
The ZiS-2’s barrel was so long in relation to its calibre that it developed a distinctive visual reputation among Soviet anti-tank guns. Its production return in 1943 reflected the changing armoured threat faced by the Red Army.
