7.5 cm Pak 50

Recreate an uncommon late-war Wehrmacht anti-tank gun with this detailed model of the 7.5 cm Panzerabwehrkanone 50. Developed as a lighter and more mobile alternative to the standard 7.5 cm Pak 40, the Pak 50 combined a compact silhouette with a weapon intended to support German infantry against armoured vehicles and field positions.

Historical Role

The 7.5 cm Pak 50 appeared during the closing stages of the Second World War, when German forces required anti-tank weapons that were easier for gun crews to move and conceal. Its shortened barrel was suited to firing hollow-charge ammunition, which could defeat armour without relying upon the very high velocity required by conventional armour-piercing projectiles. The gun could also provide direct-fire support using high-explosive ammunition.

Distinctive Appearance

The Pak 50 is recognisable by its short, substantial barrel, prominent multi-baffle muzzle brake and low split-trail carriage. Its compact proportions contrast with the long barrel of the Pak 40, while the angled shield, spoked wheels and widely spread trails create the familiar profile of a German towed Panzerabwehrkanone in firing position.

Variant Differences

The Pak 50 developed from Pak 40 components but used a shortened 7.5 cm barrel fitted to the lighter carriage associated with the 5 cm Pak 38. The shorter barrel and conspicuous muzzle brake are its clearest modelling differences. This arrangement reduced weight and improved handling while retaining a useful anti-armour role through hollow-charge ammunition.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for late-war dioramas, defensive positions, model railways, wargaming displays and specialist collectors. It can be displayed dug into a roadside emplacement, concealed behind rubble or vegetation, being towed, or accompanied by a Wehrmacht gun crew and ammunition accessories.

Fun Fact

Unlike conventional armour-piercing ammunition, a hollow-charge projectile does not depend primarily on high impact speed to penetrate armour. This principle allowed the Pak 50 to use a shorter barrel while remaining useful against armoured targets.
