85 mm 52-K Anti-Aircraft Gun
Bring a key element of Soviet wartime air defence to your collection with this detailed 3D-printed model of the 85 mm 52-K Anti-Aircraft Gun. Officially adopted as the 85 mm Air Defence Gun Model 1939, the 52-K served throughout the Second World War and became one of the Red Army’s most recognisable heavy anti-aircraft weapons.
Historical Role
The 52-K was designed to engage medium- and high-altitude aircraft, protecting cities, transport routes, industrial sites and Red Army formations. During the fighting on the Eastern Front, it could also be used in a direct-fire role against fortified positions and armoured vehicles. Its powerful 85 mm ammunition made it a valuable dual-purpose weapon when Soviet units faced urgent ground threats.
Distinctive Appearance
This gun is distinguished by its long barrel, substantial breech assembly and cruciform firing platform with folding stabilising outriggers. Its two-axle travelling carriage allowed the weapon to be towed between positions, while the elevated mounting provided the wide traverse and high angles required for anti-aircraft fire. These features create a striking silhouette for either deployed or transport-themed scenes.
Modelling Uses
The 52-K is ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, Soviet anti-aircraft batteries, urban defence positions and artillery emplacements. It can also add historical character to model railways featuring military trains or wartime freight yards. Multiple models can form a convincing gun battery for wargaming displays, while collectors can use it to represent the development of Soviet heavy air-defence artillery.
Fun Fact
The ballistic performance of the 52-K’s 85 mm ammunition helped provide the foundation for Soviet 85 mm tank guns. Weapons of this calibre later armed important vehicles including the SU-85 self-propelled gun and the T-34-85 medium tank.
