Soviet 85mm AA Gun
Bring a key element of Red Army air defence to your collection with this detailed model of the Soviet 85mm anti-aircraft gun. Best known in its wartime 52-K form, the weapon served throughout World War II and became one of the Soviet Union’s most recognisable heavy anti-aircraft artillery pieces. Its substantial carriage and long barrel make it an imposing addition to any Eastern Front scene.
Historical Role
The Soviet 85mm anti-aircraft gun was designed to engage medium- and high-altitude aircraft, defending cities, industrial areas, transport routes and military formations. Operated by trained artillery crews, it could deliver effective high-explosive fire against airborne targets. Like other powerful anti-aircraft guns of the period, it was also capable of engaging armoured vehicles and ground positions when battlefield conditions demanded, giving Red Army units a valuable secondary anti-tank and direct-fire capability.
Distinctive Appearance
The gun is visually defined by its long, slender barrel, prominent recoil system and high-elevation mounting. Its cruciform firing platform provided stability and allowed wide traverse, while folding outriggers created a characteristic cross-shaped footprint when deployed. The twin-axle, four-wheel travelling carriage gave the weapon a purposeful, heavy silhouette when being towed. Elevation and traverse controls, crew positions and mechanical details add further interest for painting and weathering.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to Eastern Front dioramas, Red Army anti-aircraft batteries, artillery parks and defensive positions. It can be displayed deployed for action or incorporated into a towing and transport scene. The smaller scales are ideal for model railways and wargaming displays, while the larger versions provide excellent detail for collectors, painters and military modelling enthusiasts.
Fun Fact
The 85mm gun’s powerful ammunition and ballistic performance helped inform the development of Soviet 85mm tank armament, a calibre later associated with vehicles such as the T-34-85.
