8.8cm Pak 43/3 L/71

Recreate one of Germany’s most formidable late-war anti-tank weapons with this detailed model of the 8.8 cm Pak 43/3 L/71. Developed from the powerful Pak 43 gun family, this version was adapted for installation in the Jagdpanther tank destroyer. Its exceptionally long barrel gives the model an unmistakable profile and makes it an impressive addition to any World War II collection.

Historical Role

The Pak 43/3 served as the principal armament of the Jagdpanther, a heavily armed Wehrmacht tank destroyer introduced during the later stages of World War II. Combining high muzzle velocity with excellent armour penetration, the weapon was intended to engage Allied tanks at long range. Mounted within the Jagdpanther’s sloped superstructure rather than on a conventional rotating turret, it supported the vehicle’s role in defensive ambushes and long-range anti-tank engagements.

Distinctive Appearance

The defining feature of the Pak 43/3 is its exceptionally long L/71 barrel, which projects prominently from the armoured gun mounting. Its substantial breech assembly, robust recoil mechanism and purpose-built mounting reflect the size and power of the weapon. These features create a striking modelling subject, whether displayed independently as an armament study or incorporated into a maintenance, factory or vehicle-interior scene.

Modelling Uses

This model is suitable for Jagdpanther-related dioramas, Wehrmacht workshop scenes, technical displays and military collections. Smaller scales work particularly well alongside model railways and wargaming displays, while the larger versions offer greater presence for detailed painting, weathering and collectors’ showcases. It can also provide a useful focal point for depot, repair-yard or ordnance-themed settings.

Fun Fact

The designation “L/71” indicates a barrel length equal to 71 times the weapon’s calibre. This unusually long barrel was a key part of the Pak 43 family’s high-velocity performance and contributed greatly to its distinctive silhouette.
