88mm Ammo Boxes and Shell Handler
Add authentic Wehrmacht artillery detail to your World War II scene with this finely rendered set of German 8.8 cm ammunition boxes and a shell-handling accessory. Designed to complement gun positions, supply areas and vehicle displays, the set captures the practical equipment needed to store, move and prepare heavy ammunition for action.
Historical Role
German 8.8 cm ammunition was used with several notable weapons, including the 8.8 cm Flak 18, Flak 36 and Flak 37. Although developed primarily for anti-aircraft defence, these guns also became highly effective against armoured and fortified targets when employed in a ground role. Sturdy ammunition containers protected rounds during transport and storage, while handling equipment helped gun crews move the heavy shells efficiently between supply points and the gun position.
Distinctive Appearance
The boxed ammunition creates the angular, stacked appearance characteristic of an active Wehrmacht supply point. Defined container edges, panel details and practical carrying features contrast with the longer, more specialised form of the shell handler. Together, the components provide a convincing sense of scale around an 8.8 cm gun, artillery tractor, ammunition vehicle or field emplacement.
Modelling Uses
Use this set to furnish anti-aircraft batteries, roadside resupply scenes, workshops, depots or late-war defensive positions. The boxes can be arranged in neat stacks, placed beside transport vehicles or scattered around a busy gun crew. Suitable for military dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, these accessories add historical context without dominating the main subject.
Fun Fact
The famous “88” earned its formidable reputation partly because German crews discovered that the weapon’s high-velocity fire, originally intended to reach aircraft at altitude, could also be devastating against tanks when the gun was used with suitable ammunition and sights.
