88mm Pak.43-41 Scheunentor AT
Bring formidable late-war German anti-tank firepower to your collection with this detailed model of the 8.8 cm Pak 43/41. Developed as an expedient field mounting for the powerful Pak 43 weapon, this imposing artillery piece became one of the Wehrmacht’s most recognisable heavy anti-tank guns of the Second World War.
Historical Role
Introduced during 1943, the Pak 43/41 was intended to counter increasingly well-armoured Allied and Soviet tanks at long range. Its high-velocity 8.8 cm gun offered exceptional armour penetration, but the complete weapon was heavy and difficult to manoeuvre without a suitable towing vehicle. In action, crews relied on careful positioning, camouflage and prepared firing sites to exploit its range while limiting exposure to enemy fire.
Distinctive Appearance
The Pak 43/41 is instantly identified by its exceptionally long barrel, large angular shield, substantial wheels and widely spread split trails. Its towering profile gave the weapon a bulky, unmistakable silhouette, while the broad shield protected the crew from small-arms fire and shell fragments from the front.
Variant Differences
The Pak 43/41 combined the Pak 43 barrel and recoil system with an interim split-trail carriage assembled using existing heavy artillery components. Unlike the lower, purpose-designed cruciform mounting of the standard towed Pak 43, it had a higher profile, conventional wheels and prominent trails. This arrangement allowed the weapon to enter service while dedicated Pak 43 carriages remained limited.
Modelling Uses
An excellent centrepiece for late-war European dioramas, this model suits concealed anti-tank positions, roadside deployments, gun lines and towing scenes. It also adds a striking heavy-weapon element to model railways, historically themed wargaming displays and collections focused on Wehrmacht artillery. The range of scales supports everything from compact layouts to highly detailed display builds for collectors.
Fun Fact
German troops nicknamed the Pak 43/41 “Scheunentor,” meaning “barn door,” a reference to the gun’s very large shield and conspicuous profile rather than its formidable ballistic performance.
