BA-11 Soviet Heavy Armoured Car – LIMITED PRODUCTION
The BA-11 was a Soviet heavy armoured car developed shortly before the Second World War. Combining substantial armour and a turret-mounted cannon with a wheeled chassis, it represented an ambitious attempt to provide the Red Army with a fast, heavily armed reconnaissance vehicle. This detailed 3D-printed model captures the imposing character of one of the Soviet Union’s less common early-war armoured vehicles. It carries our LIMITED PRODUCTION badge because only a small number of BA-11 heavy armoured cars were produced.
Historical Role
Designed for armoured reconnaissance and mobile fire support, the BA-11 could engage infantry positions, light vehicles and other armoured cars while travelling rapidly on roads. Its principal armament was a 45 mm cannon mounted in a rotating turret, supported by machine guns. Entering service around the beginning of the Eastern Front campaign, it reflected Soviet interest in powerful wheeled fighting vehicles, although difficult terrain naturally favoured tracked vehicles.
Distinctive Appearance
The BA-11 is immediately recognisable by its long, angular engine bonnet, sharply sloped armoured hull and compact turret. Its three-axle layout features a single front axle and closely spaced twin rear axles, giving the vehicle a long yet purposeful profile. Low-mounted spare wheels along the hull sides, prominent mudguards, vision ports and faceted armour surfaces add further visual interest.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for early-war Eastern Front dioramas, the BA-11 can be displayed on a road, near a command post or alongside Red Army infantry and support vehicles. Smaller scales suit model railways and compact wargaming displays, while larger versions provide ample surface detail for painting, weathering and collectors’ showcases.
Fun Fact
The spare wheels mounted low on the BA-11’s sides were more than simple replacements: their position could help the vehicle pass over obstacles and reduce the risk of grounding its long chassis.
