BA-20A Soviet Light Armoured Car
The BA-20A was a compact Soviet light armoured car associated with Red Army reconnaissance and communications units during World War II. Built around an automotive-style chassis, it combined road mobility with modest armour and machine-gun armament. This detailed 3D-printed model captures the practical, unmistakable character of an early-war Soviet scout vehicle.
Historical Role
BA-20-series armoured cars were used for reconnaissance, liaison, command support, convoy escort and local security. Their speed and relatively simple wheeled construction suited roads and firm ground, allowing crews to scout routes or carry messages between formations. However, light protection and limited cross-country performance made them vulnerable in direct combat, particularly on the difficult terrain of the Eastern Front. They were therefore most effective when used for observation and communication rather than as substitutes for tanks.
Distinctive Appearance
The BA-20A is recognisable by its compact four-wheeled layout, narrow automotive proportions and faceted armoured body. A projecting bonnet covers the front-mounted engine, while curved mudguards frame the road wheels. The small rotating turret and its single machine-gun mounting emphasise the vehicle’s scouting role. Sloping armour panels, vision ports and the close-set rear body create a distinctive silhouette that contrasts sharply with larger Soviet armoured cars and tracked fighting vehicles.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to early-war Eastern Front dioramas, Red Army reconnaissance scenes, roadside checkpoints and headquarters displays. Smaller scales complement model railways and large battlefield layouts, while larger versions provide greater presence for detailed painting, weathering and vehicle collections. It is equally suitable for wargaming displays and collectors seeking a less commonly represented Soviet wheeled vehicle.
Fun Fact
The wider BA-20 family included railway-adapted vehicles capable of operating on rails, reflecting the importance of railway reconnaissance and communications across the Soviet Union’s vast transport network.
