BA-64B Armored Car (1943)
Bring a compact and unmistakable Red Army reconnaissance vehicle to your collection with this detailed 3D-printed model of the Soviet BA-64B Armored Car. Introduced during World War II, the BA-64B combined mobility, light armor and machine-gun firepower in a small four-wheeled vehicle suited to scouting and battlefield support.
Historical Role
The BA-64B served primarily with Soviet reconnaissance, headquarters and liaison units. Its speed and compact dimensions made it useful for route scouting, communications, convoy escort and supporting advancing infantry. Although its light armor and armament were not intended for fighting tanks or fortified positions, it was effective in patrol duties and fast-moving operations across the Eastern Front.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is instantly recognizable by its sharply angled armored hull, short wheelbase and small open-topped, multi-faceted turret. A single DT machine gun provided defensive fire, while the steeply sloped armor helped maximize protection without excessive weight. Its exposed wheels, narrow body and elevated stance give the BA-64B a purposeful silhouette that contrasts strongly with larger Soviet armored vehicles.
Variant Differences
The BA-64B was an improved development of the original BA-64. It adopted the wider-track GAZ-67-series chassis, improving stability and reducing the earlier vehicle’s tendency to overturn on steep or uneven ground. The basic machine-gun armament and angular armored layout remained, while the wider wheel spacing is the most important visible distinction for modellers.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of Soviet military vehicles. It can be placed alongside infantry columns, command posts, supply convoys or advancing armored formations to represent reconnaissance and liaison operations.
Fun Fact
The BA-64’s turret-mounted DT machine gun could be elevated to a steep angle, allowing its crew to engage targets in upper floors and, in suitable circumstances, low-flying aircraft.
