BL 4.5-inch Medium Gun
Recreate an important piece of British heavy field artillery with this detailed model of the BL 4.5-inch Medium Gun. Designed to represent the weapon’s purposeful wartime appearance, it is an ideal addition to British World War II artillery batteries, transport columns and operational dioramas.
Historical Role
The BL 4.5-inch Medium Gun served with British and Commonwealth medium artillery regiments during World War II. Its long-range fire supported operations by engaging enemy artillery, command positions, transport routes and other targets beyond the reach of lighter field guns. Employed in carefully coordinated batteries, it contributed to counter-battery fire and deep bombardment in campaigns including North Africa, Italy and North-West Europe.
Distinctive Appearance
The gun is immediately recognisable by its long, relatively slender barrel, prominent recoil mechanism and robust carriage. Large wheels, a broad protective shield and widely spread trails give the model a stable, low-set firing stance. These features contrast with the shorter, heavier-looking barrel of the related 5.5-inch medium gun, making the 4.5-inch weapon visually distinctive in a mixed artillery position.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to dioramas depicting gun lines, ammunition handling, towing preparations or a battery deployed beside a field command post. It can also provide a historically grounded military load or lineside scene for model railways. Wargaming displays can use it to represent British medium artillery support, while collectors can add an important but sometimes overlooked weapon to a World War II artillery collection.
Fun Fact
The 4.5-inch gun shared its basic carriage with the British 5.5-inch medium gun. This common approach simplified aspects of production and equipment support while allowing artillery units to field weapons suited to different ranges and shell weights.
