BL 7.2-inch Howitzer
Bring the weight of British heavy artillery to your collection with this detailed model of the BL 7.2-inch Howitzer. Introduced during the Second World War, this imposing weapon gave the Royal Artillery a powerful means of engaging fortified positions, enemy batteries and other important targets beyond the reach of lighter field guns.
Historical Role
The BL 7.2-inch Howitzer entered British service in 1942 and was operated by heavy regiments of the Royal Artillery. It saw action in North Africa, Italy and North-West Europe, delivering high-explosive fire against strongpoints, communications routes and troop concentrations. It was also valuable in counter-battery operations, where sustained heavy fire could suppress or destroy hostile artillery positions.
Distinctive Appearance
This howitzer is instantly recognisable by its large-calibre barrel, substantial breech assembly and heavily built carriage. Its low, weighty stance reflects the considerable forces generated when firing. Early examples used converted First World War-era 8-inch howitzer components, while later development improved range and stability. The exposed operating mechanisms, prominent wheels and powerful barrel create a striking artillery silhouette in any display.
Modelling Uses
An excellent centrepiece for World War II dioramas, the BL 7.2-inch Howitzer can be displayed in a prepared gun position with artillery crews, ammunition vehicles and supply equipment. It is equally suitable for model railways featuring military traffic, historically themed wargaming displays and collectors of British artillery. Smaller scales work well for expansive battlefield scenes, while larger versions offer greater visibility for painting, weathering and close-up presentation.
Fun Fact
The earliest BL 7.2-inch Howitzers were created by relining existing 8-inch howitzer barrels, allowing Britain to field an effective heavy weapon more quickly. Their recoil could be so forceful that special ramps were used behind the wheels to help control movement and return the gun towards its firing position.
