BMW R75
Recreate one of the Wehrmacht’s most recognisable heavy motorcycle combinations with this detailed BMW R75 3D-printed model. Designed for demanding military service during the Second World War, the R75 paired a robust motorcycle with a powered sidecar, giving German units a versatile vehicle for reconnaissance, communications and battlefield transport.
Historical Role
Introduced during the war, the BMW R75 served with German forces across Europe, North Africa and the Eastern Front. It carried dispatch riders, reconnaissance teams, officers and small quantities of equipment over roads and difficult terrain. Its driven sidecar wheel, selectable differential lock and low-range gearing provided greater cross-country ability than a conventional motorcycle combination, although mud, snow and extreme conditions could still challenge both machine and crew.
Distinctive Appearance
The R75 is instantly identifiable by its horizontally opposed twin-cylinder engine, exposed tubular frame and substantial sidecar. The sidecar body, prominent mudguards, spare wheel and rugged military fittings give the vehicle a purposeful silhouette. Its asymmetrical three-wheel layout makes it an especially characterful subject when displayed with figures, stowage or roadside scenery.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Wehrmacht convoy scenes, reconnaissance patrols, dispatch-rider vignettes and maintenance settings. It can add movement and period detail to dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors’ showcases. Smaller scales suit larger formations and transport scenes, while the larger options provide more scope for painting, weathering and close-up presentation.
Fun Fact
The BMW R75 and Zündapp KS 750 were developed into closely standardised heavy motorcycle combinations, with efforts made during wartime production to increase the number of interchangeable components between the two designs.
