Bofors 40 mm L/60 Gun
Bring one of Britain’s most recognisable Second World War anti-aircraft weapons to your collection with this detailed Bofors 40 mm L/60 Gun model. Its distinctive carriage, elevated barrel and exposed operating position make it an excellent centrepiece for airfield, coastal defence and field artillery scenes.
Historical Role
Originally developed in Sweden, the Bofors 40 mm L/60 was adopted and manufactured in Britain in large numbers during the Second World War. British and Commonwealth forces used it as a light anti-aircraft gun against low-flying aircraft, including fighters, dive-bombers and ground-attack machines. Batteries protected troops, airfields, ports, bridges, supply areas and other strategically important positions. Although primarily an anti-aircraft weapon, the gun could also engage lightly protected ground targets when necessary.
Distinctive Appearance
The Bofors is immediately identifiable by its long, slender barrel, compact breech assembly and open crew platform. The towed configuration features a four-wheeled carriage that could be lowered and stabilised for firing, giving the deployed weapon a broad, purposeful stance. Handwheels, sights, ammunition-loading area and angular mechanical components create an intricate silhouette suited to close viewing.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Second World War dioramas depicting British airfield defence, anti-aircraft batteries, coastal positions or advancing field formations. It can also add an authentic military feature to period model railways, particularly around docks, depots and strategic junctions. Multiple guns can form a battery for wargaming displays, while the weapon’s historical importance makes it an appealing subject for artillery enthusiasts and collectors.
Fun Fact
The Bofors was loaded using four-round ammunition clips. A trained crew could feed successive clips into the weapon, helping it maintain a practical rate of fire against fast-moving aerial targets.
