BS-3 100 mm M1944
Recreate one of the Red Army’s most powerful late-war artillery pieces with this detailed model of the Soviet 100 mm Field Gun Model 1944, better known as the BS-3. Introduced during the final phase of the Second World War, its imposing profile and formidable anti-armour capability make it an excellent centrepiece for Eastern Front collections and displays.
Historical Role
The BS-3 served as both a heavy anti-tank weapon and a field artillery piece. Its high-velocity 100 mm gun could engage heavily armoured vehicles with direct fire, while also delivering indirect fire against fortifications, troop concentrations and other battlefield targets. Entering Red Army service in 1944, it saw use during the great Soviet offensives that carried the fighting westward into Central Europe. Although powerful, the gun was large and heavy, making careful positioning and towing support essential.
Distinctive Appearance
The BS-3 is instantly recognisable by its exceptionally long barrel, substantial double-baffle muzzle brake and broad protective shield. A low carriage, large road wheels and widely spread split trails gave the weapon a purposeful, stable stance when deployed. These features create a dramatic silhouette, particularly when modelled in a prepared firing position with its crew, ammunition and towing vehicle.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for late-war Eastern Front dioramas, artillery emplacements, urban battle scenes and Red Army columns. It also provides a distinctive military load or trackside subject for model railways. Wargaming displays can use it to represent Soviet heavy anti-tank or field artillery support, while collectors will appreciate its combination of historical importance and visually impressive proportions.
Fun Fact
The BS-3’s powerful 100 mm performance drew upon Soviet naval-gun ballistics, adapting that level of firepower into a land-based artillery system capable of fulfilling both anti-tank and general field-artillery duties.
