BT-2 37mm

Recreate one of the Soviet Union’s earliest fast tanks with this detailed BT-2 37mm model. Developed during the interwar period and still in Red Army service during the opening stages of World War II, the BT-2 combined high mobility with a compact, distinctive design. This model is ideal for early-war Soviet collections, Eastern Front scenes and displays charting the development of Soviet armoured forces.

Historical Role

The BT-2 was designed as a fast cavalry tank, intended to exploit breakthroughs, conduct reconnaissance and operate ahead of slower formations. Its Christie-type suspension gave it impressive mobility for its time. Although increasingly outdated by 1941, surviving BT-2 tanks were committed during the early fighting on the Eastern Front, where mechanical wear, limited armour protection and the rapidly changing nature of armoured warfare reduced their effectiveness.

Distinctive Appearance

The BT-2 is immediately recognisable by its narrow riveted hull, sharply profiled front, compact turret and four large road wheels on each side. The exposed Christie suspension layout, absence of conventional return rollers and prominent track profile give the vehicle a lean, high-speed appearance unlike later Soviet tanks.

Variant Differences

The 37mm version was a cannon-armed configuration of the BT-2, differing from examples fitted with twin DT machine guns. Its compact turret carried a 37mm gun, giving the tank greater ability to engage armoured vehicles and defended positions. For modellers, the turret armament is the clearest visible distinction and reflects Soviet efforts to give a fast, lightly protected tank useful battlefield firepower.

Modelling Uses

This BT-2 suits early-war Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of Soviet armour. It can represent a vehicle on manoeuvres, advancing with Red Army formations, abandoned after heavy fighting or displayed alongside later BT-series and T-34 tanks to illustrate Soviet design development.

Fun Fact

Like other early BT tanks, the BT-2 could theoretically operate without its tracks, driving on its road wheels and steering through the front pair—an unusual feature inherited from the Christie design.
