BT-42 1-56 – Finnish World War II Assault Gun – RARE VARIANT

Recreate one of Finland’s most unusual armoured vehicles with this detailed BT-42 model. Developed during World War II from captured Soviet equipment, the BT-42 combined an existing fast-tank chassis with a Finnish-designed turret and British artillery piece. It receives the RARE VARIANT badge because only a small number of Finnish BT-42 assault guns were produced.

Historical Role

The BT-42 was created to provide Finnish forces with a mobile infantry-support weapon during the Continuation War. Its 4.5-inch howitzer was intended primarily for engaging field positions, fortifications and other battlefield targets with high-explosive ammunition. Although visually imposing, it was an assault gun rather than a purpose-built tank destroyer.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its tall, angular turret, prominent gun mounting and short, large-calibre howitzer. Beneath this enlarged fighting compartment, the BT-7-derived hull retained its low profile, sloping glacis and Christie-type suspension with large road wheels. This unusual combination creates a striking silhouette unlike that of conventional Finnish or Soviet wartime armour.

Variant Differences

The BT-42 developed from the Soviet BT-7 fast tank. Its original turret and 45 mm tank gun were replaced by a much larger Finnish turret carrying a British 4.5-inch howitzer, while the basic hull, engine layout and running gear were largely retained. The oversized turret is the clearest modelling difference, reflecting the vehicle’s conversion from fast tank to mobile fire-support platform.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for Finnish World War II dioramas, urban defence scenes and captured-vehicle collections. Smaller scales suit model railways and compact wargaming displays, while larger versions provide ample presence for detailed painting, weathering and display. Its rare configuration also makes it an appealing subject for specialist collectors.

Fun Fact

The BT chassis was based around Christie suspension, whose large road wheels gave the original Soviet fast tank family its distinctive appearance. The BT-42 retained this recognisable running gear beneath its uniquely Finnish turret.
