BT-7 M-1935
Recreate one of the Soviet Union’s best-known fast tanks with this detailed BT-7 M-1935 model. Developed for speed and operational mobility, the BT-7 combined Christie-type suspension with a powerful automotive-derived engine and a versatile 45 mm main gun. Its unmistakable profile makes it an excellent subject for early World War II Red Army collections and Eastern Front scenes.
Historical Role
The BT-7 served as a Soviet fast tank, intended for reconnaissance, exploitation and rapid advances following a breakthrough. It saw action before and during World War II, including the Soviet campaign in Poland, the Winter War against Finland and the opening stages of the Eastern Front. Although fast and well armed for its period, its relatively light armour left it vulnerable during the intense fighting of 1941.
Distinctive Appearance
The M-1935 is recognisable by its cylindrical turret, sloping welded hull and prominent large-diameter road wheels associated with the Christie suspension. The compact turret carried a 45 mm gun alongside a coaxial DT machine gun. Long mudguards, a low hull profile and the spacious rear engine compartment further emphasise the BT series’ characteristic blend of speed-focused engineering and early Soviet tank design.
Variant Differences
The BT-7 developed from the earlier BT-5, retaining its general armament and convertible wheel-and-track concept while introducing a redesigned welded hull and an improved engine installation. The M-1935 is most visibly distinguished by its early cylindrical turret, whereas later BT-7 production adopted a conical turret. These changes were intended to improve mobility, reliability and production suitability without abandoning the fast-tank role.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for Soviet armoured columns, Winter War settings and early Eastern Front dioramas, this model also suits model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of interwar or World War II vehicles. The broad scale range supports everything from compact battlefield layouts to highly detailed display pieces.
Fun Fact
The BT-7 could operate on tracks or, after track removal, travel on its road wheels with the front pair used for steering—a striking feature designed to increase speed on suitable roads.
