BT-7A – Soviet Artillery Support Tank
Bring distinctive early-war Red Army armour to your collection with the Blueprint to Print 3D BT-7A. Developed from the fast BT-7 series, this artillery-support variant exchanged the standard tank’s smaller-calibre gun for a substantially larger weapon intended to deliver heavier high-explosive fire.
Historical Role
The BT-7A was designed to provide mobile artillery support for Soviet armoured formations. Its short-barrelled 76.2 mm gun was better suited to engaging field fortifications, infantry positions and other battlefield obstacles than the standard BT-7’s 45 mm weapon. It belonged to the Red Army’s pre-war and early-war generation of fast tanks, combining support firepower with the mobility associated with the wider BT family.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle retains the BT-7’s recognisable low hull, sloping front armour, prominent road wheels and Christie-type suspension. Its most obvious identifying feature is the enlarged turret carrying a short, thick gun barrel. This heavier-looking turret and artillery-style armament give the BT-7A a noticeably different silhouette from standard gun-tank versions.
Variant Differences
Developed from the better-known BT-7, the BT-7A retained the base vehicle’s fast chassis and running gear but received a larger turret with a 76.2 mm artillery-support gun in place of the usual 45 mm tank gun. The broader turret and short-barrelled weapon are the key modelling differences. This armament change explains its SPECIAL WEAPONS badge: the BT-7A carried a larger support weapon than standard BT-7 variants.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for Eastern Front dioramas, Red Army vehicle collections and early World War II scenes. It also suits model railways requiring period military loads, wargaming displays centred on Soviet armoured formations, and collectors seeking a visually distinctive BT-series variant.
Fun Fact
Like other BT-series tanks, the BT-7A belonged to a family designed around convertible wheel-and-track running gear, reflecting Soviet interest in combining high road speed with tracked cross-country mobility.
