Challenger (A30) – LIMITED PRODUCTION

Recreate one of Britain’s less common wartime cruiser tanks with this detailed Challenger (A30) 3D print. Developed during the Second World War, the Challenger combined the mobility expected of a cruiser tank with the formidable anti-armour capability of the British 17-pounder gun. Only about 200 Challenger tanks were produced, making this comparatively uncommon vehicle a fitting addition to the LIMITED PRODUCTION range.

Historical Role

The Challenger was designed to provide British armoured units with mobile anti-tank firepower capable of defeating heavily armoured German vehicles. It served in north-west Europe during the later stages of the war, operating alongside Cromwell-equipped formations. Its powerful gun allowed it to engage targets that were difficult for the Cromwell’s standard armament, while retaining the speed needed to accompany fast-moving cruiser tank units.

Distinctive Appearance

The A30 is immediately recognisable by its exceptionally long 17-pounder barrel, tall angular turret and elongated hull. Six road wheels on each side distinguish it from the shorter Cromwell, while the substantial turret contrasts sharply with the relatively low hull. These features give the Challenger a purposeful, front-heavy silhouette that stands out in any British armoured collection.

Variant Differences

Developed using major components from the Cromwell cruiser tank, the Challenger featured a lengthened chassis with an additional road wheel, an enlarged turret arrangement and the much larger 17-pounder gun. Its extended hull and tall turret are the most visible modelling differences. The design existed to give Cromwell formations a similarly mobile vehicle with greater anti-tank capability.

Modelling Uses

Ideal for late-war European dioramas, military-themed model railways, wargaming displays and specialist collectors, the Challenger can represent British armoured operations, road columns, maintenance scenes or advancing cruiser formations. Multiple scales make it suitable for compact layouts, tabletop forces and highly detailed display builds.

Fun Fact

Although it shares its name with the much later Challenger 1 and Challenger 2 main battle tanks, the wartime A30 belonged to an entirely different generation of British armoured vehicle development.
